Okay, I might have to just create an article series. I was in the process of writing a rant about Terms of Service and what should be done about them, when out of nowhere, like I got slapped for making a joke about Jada Smith, a new Neurotically Yours video dropped titled “The B.S. of T.O.S.” So I guess I’m having to quickly shuffle some things around in today’s blog post.
My longer post about my disdain for the Windows EULA and Xbox TOS is still coming, but I just want to share a bit about this week’s episode of Neurotically Yours.
Now I have my own stance on people reading Terms and Conditions. I believe most platforms are trying to screw you over, but honestly the video makes some good points.
My personal stance is to self host as much as you can, avoid major platforms, and never agree to a Ring doorbell if you know what is good for you.
At the same time, the video’s stance is basically that a company should just state “We don’t touch your shit” and sadly, as much as I’d love that as an option, the biggest issue is that most countries require a company or platform to have some method to bust in the virtual door if need be, hence the “legal yoga to stretch those terms.”
Tell me what you think in the comments, or more likely on the Fediverse.
My stance is basically that the good companies don’t want to deal with the bullshit, shady companies won’t care no matter what we do, so your best bet is to just self host what you can and really look into who you’re using.
