Time for a quick update on the issues with the rugged machine and SlackWare. First off, I wanna thank Volkerding [the creator of SlackWare] for saying he uses the ThinkPad X13 [non-Yoga version], so if you’re not taking the advice of the man who created the distribution, then what the hell are you even thinking?
So while I wait to see if I can get that handled, let’s talk about what I am going to do for the rugged machine “PublicSafety,” which I’ve talked about in my article “Himmynation on PublicSafety [Linux Config Part 1].”
I don’t understand the whole drive to waste CPU and GPU power on making things have fancy graphics. Not everything has to look like some Hackerman terminal, but I decided despite my disdain for bloat I wanted to at least have some fun with this article series.
Second of all, I decided to give Omarchy a shot on the rugged laptop, so fingers crossed that goes well. But for now I want to just talk about the nightmare it’s been getting this machine to work how I wanted and needed. It made sense that I’d be able to make it a double whammy: test out Omarchy for an article while trying to get the rugged machine to work out how I need it to.
For those who haven’t read the article “It’s a Cruel World, Linux Users” Omarchy is DHH’s very opinionated Linux fork of Arch.
First off, the colour scheme I went with was the standard Anarcho-Transhumanism Flag. Since I wanna keep Himmynation for a SlackWare config, I decided that I’ll call the Omarchy setup “Project Carthage”
Now I’ve stated my issues with Wayland and that, so I’m gonna put my money where my mouth is. For readers who don’t know the origin of the term “Project Carthage” I am not referring to Roman Carthage. I know it’s a stereotype that some people keep thinking of Rome, but for me I decided to go with the name of the Virtual World super weapon project from the 2000s series Code Lyoko.
I know my Elder Gen Z status is showing, but what do you expect? I am a techie whose main SlackWare config is named after an alcoholic demon huntress and my social media handle on DEFCON Social is named after a Pain Killer extracted from the dead and “Comes in a little glass vial,” but that’s beside the point for this article, let’s get back on track.
Right off the bat, installation was pretty smooth once I fixed a few issues with the BIOS being confused. Right now I’m still altering the setup/rice to be something more enjoyable than the default install.
My upcoming tests for this article series will be as follows, with some extras if anyone wants to see how well or poorly it performs on my rugged DELL machine.
The first test will be how well Omarchy handles LTE/GPS data, video playback, remote code execution, multitasking, Bluetooth earpiece, video calls, audio calls, and how much AI can be removed from the default config.
If any of my readers want to see any other tests, let me know in the comments while I try to run the distribution for the coming week.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve gotta get back to my rewatch of Chucky Season 2 while I do some coding.
