First they did KOSA, then the KIDS Act, now the United States is trying to pass the SCREEN [Shielding Children’s Retinas from Egregious Exposure on the Net] Act. Now some people might go what’s the big deal? Well that’s simple and the EFF has already written about this. “The SCREEN Act Threatens Privacy Far Beyond Adult Websites” is a piece I recommend you read if you haven’t, along with the EFF’s page “Online vs Person ID Checks.”
Now I’ve been very vocal against the impact of ID at the OS level. I have actively been refusing to use systemd and other Linux projects that attempt age gating.
I’m sorry, but when companies fail time and again to keep my ID safe, why the hell would I want my OS to be ID verified? I mean let’s be real, where is the logic?
If I feel like watching a horror movie that is none of my operating system’s business.
Maybe if there was better security I’d feel differently, but when even whole countries get compromised how can I trust a closed source OS? This may be crude to say but I don’t need some nanny state idiot judging me for pounding a Rockstar and reading a smutty fanfic about Amanda Young. I’m an adult and can read whatever.
But honestly let’s get back onto the main topic. We’ve also seen a judge in Texas, as reported by Reclaim the Net, who wants Discord to use UK age checks but on Americans, which I don’t even understand the logic behind, like there is no active law forcing this.
I am not saying it’s connected but why is it we see a judge trying to push this to keep focus away from the SCREEN Act vote? Something is very suspicious if you ask me. August 5th 2026 the SCREEN Act which sounds safe on the surface will create a data-goldmine for ID theft.
I say all my readers in America should please contact your Senator, and those outside America should really keep an eye out for similar laws trying to be forced through in your own countries.
