So after watching a recent video by Jeff Geerling about the XPS 13 a sub-$900 laptop from Dell. I think it could work for my needs in 2027 going to Japan. That’s right, I have a trip planned, so I need to think about trip hardware for the 14 to 22 hour flight.
At first I thought of bringing my rugged laptop with me to Japan, but the issue became clear with more Tenchi Muyo content on the horizon and the possibility of more Umineko [for some reason Prime Japan gave us 1080p streams of the anime we’ve only ever had DVD rips of, so I believe something is coming].
A few other machines I was looking at were the Framework 13 [AMD Edition], a ThinkPad X Series, maybe even System76, but really I think I need something to use on the flight to do coding and possibly dump photos from a camera to a drive.
Also, I plan to spend my time with someone I believe the blog will get to know better soon enough.
For this trip, I had some very key specs in mind for a machine, but I’m not sure if the XPS 13 is right for this trip.
Key features needed included simple things such as a USB-C port for my security dongle, good battery life, the ability to charge on USB-C so I can get a worldwide adapter for traveling between North America, Australia, Europe and Japan.
But the biggest thing I need is Slackware support, which is a current issue with the Rugged Laptop; which is why I was looking into NixOS or Devuan, since for some reason the rugged machine’s LTE modem wasn’t working in Slackware, and that was part of the reason I got the machine.
A big thing I am thinking about is what I’d call the laptop, as I give nicknames to every machine, and with Himmynation being the Rugged machine, I might call this travel rig “JLJohns” or maybe “RyoOki” since I will be taking this rig on a flight to Japan.
If any readers have ideas for other machine names, I’d love to hear them or ideas for other machines I could look at. I’m not heading out till late 2027.
