With the Calendar software on hold while I wait for FPC [The “Franklin Planner Corporation”] to get sorted out so I know if the calendar would be released as is or if it would be able to get Franklin Planner terms into the app, well, the idea came to me to try to mess with Devuan.
So, with my rugged laptop I’ve nicknamed “PublicSafety” in mind, I decided to call my custom Devuan or perhaps even NixOS install script config Himeno [origin for the term “Himmynation”]. Looking back at this “Himmynation” meme along with owning Weezo.CC, I think I might need to start giving RG33 more credit.
This first article will be me talking about my choices for users.
The desktop environment (DE) I decided to go with is Common Desktop Environment as the primary. Now, some might say “That’s from June 1993, why use that?” Well, the simple fact is I don’t care about it looking nice; I just want a simple, battle-tested Desktop Environment that works. The last thing I need is to be in the middle of bumblefuck nowhere and have no desktop.
This laptop also has GPS and an LTE modem, so this machine will be a mobile battle station, for lack of a better term.
The other DEs that come preinstalled as fallbacks are XFCE, OpenBox, and Window Maker.
The reason I am going with xlibre over Wayland is the fact that, while Wayland is very pretty, it’s far from being ready for daily use in the way I would use the system.
I am still debating whether I would use Devuan or NixOS as the base OS for the machine, since my big issue is that I need to be able to have control over what is updated, removal of SystemD, and more privacy controls.
